New Patients: What to Expect and FAQ

You will immediately feel at home the moment you walk in the door.

You will immediately feel at home the moment you walk in the door.

If you’ve ever gone to a social event where you didn’t know anyone, you know how uncomfortable that can make you feel.  Our goal is to eliminate every shred of apprehension and make you feel at home.

Since chiropractic care involves a series of visits, with each one building on the ones before, it’s important that our relationship can go the distance. We’ve found that one of the best ways to have successful patient relationships is to explain everything in advance. No surprises!

The more you understand who we are, what we do and why we do it, the better results you’ll enjoy. It’s as simple as that.

Many times, the doctors will treat patients on their initial visit.  It depends on the severity of the problem and the patients underlying health.  However, sometimes, the first treatment is done after the doctors review the x-rays or MRI reports, and then go over the report of findings with the patient on the second visit.   In the beginning of a treatment plan, treatments usually include a chiropractic manipulation and physiotherapy such as therapeutic ultrasound or electrical muscle stimulation.  The goal is to reduce pain.  As the patients condition improves, therapeutic exercise and stretching is added to help stabilize the condition and prevent relapses.  Generally, treatments last 15-20 minutes.

So, check us out here. Poke around. Get to know us. Then, contact us to make an appointment so we can get to know you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic

What do usual chiropractic treatments consist of?

The doctors will incorporate a treatment plan specific for your condition.  We commonly use Diversified, Thompson and flexion-distraction techniques.  Physiotherapy modalities include electrical muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound and intersegmental traction.  Kinesiotaping to support the involved structures and promote soft tissue healing is also commonly done.  We also can fit patients for custom foot orthotics.  During the recovery process, we will incorporate stretching and stabilization exercises as well.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes.  A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are “remarkably safe.” By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record. A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited. Compare the statistics: adjustments are about 100 times safer than taking an over-the-counter pain reliever.

How many adjustments will I need?

The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their individual health goals. Many patients sense some progress within a week or two of frequent visits. Visits are less often as your spine stabilizes. In difficult cases, complete healing can take months or even years.

Is it safe to adjust babies and children?

Yes.  Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Colic, unusual crying, poor appetite or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress. Adjustments are gentle.  Knowing exactly where to adjust, no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato is involved. Dr. Dana Celar specializes in chiropractic for children.

Can I adjust myself?

No.  Some people can make their joints “pop” but that’s not an adjustment! Worse, damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even the doctors of Celar Chiropractic must consult each other to benefit from chiropractic care. They do not “self adjust.”

Isn’t some back pain normal?

No.  Pain of any kind, at any age, is a sign that something isn’t right. Pain is the way your body signals that a limit has been reached or a problem has developed. Since we can adapt, minor aches and pains are often shrugged off. While they may go away, if the underlying problem remains unattended, the problem can slowly worsen until it becomes more difficult and expensive to resolve.

What does an adjustment feel like?

Most patients report a sense of well-being or a feeling of calmness. There is usually a release of tension or stress.  Since repeated adjustments are necessary, if adjustments didn’t feel good, patients wouldn’t return to finish their care. Chiropractic doctors are expert at making adjustments feel good.

Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?

Yes.  Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. Surgery often causes instability above or below the involved level. This will be the focus of your chiropractic care.

Can elderly patients or patients with osteoporosis get an adjustment?

Yes. When developing a care plan, the doctors at Celar Chiropractic consider the unique circumstances of each patient. There are many ways to adjust the spine. The method selected will be best suited to your age, size and condition.
